Ukrainian women dress every day like they are going to a social event.
On the streets of Kyiv, the ladies are dressed like Parisian models. They wear the latest in fashionable jeans. Their shirts and scarves are well ironed and carefully adorned. Their belts and shoes are clean and polished. Every young woman, and most of the older ladies dress in attractive clothing. Even the old babushkas, on their meager state pensions, wearing the old brown Soviet jackets and thick winter boots are clean and their suits are carefully assembled and buttoned.
My wife, from Kyiv, has friends who saved money by not eating for days. This allowed them to purchase nice clothing. Clothing under communism was difficult to acquire. Today, those people who lived without nice clothes then satisfy those unfulfilled desires to have nice clothing. Ukrainian, Russian and former USSR women dress attractively.
So, YOU must likewise arrive in good clothing and neat appearance. Polish your shoes. Wear new shirts. Buy a new belt.Wear something that is you. Do not conform to an expectation. The lady is looking to meet "you", not the image of what you think she wants.
Clothing is an expression of uniqueness and personality to the Ukrainians. Each person finds a unique style, and this style flows through their wardrobe. Our friend, Vlad, dresses very nicely, and always wears suspenders. This is his trademark.
Luba, a friend who now lives in Seattle, wears animal skin patterns. She has a white tiger patterned coat and even some pants of faux leopard skin. While such clothing seems more like the style of prostitutes in America, in Ukraine, there is no such implication. However, this is Luba's style. Each woman has a style.
On my first trip to Ukraine, I met a young lady in Kharkov. She had a blue jumper and looked very respectable. It was very, very cold, even in May. However, she refused my jacket when offered. So, I pulled us into a small restaurant for some tea and a light meal. She explained through the interpreter that my black leather jacket did not compliment her blue jumper. Both belonged to different styles. So, rather than clash styles, she walked along in the cold, biting wind until her hands turned blue.

Do not forget gloves when traveling to Kiev. It is cold most of the year. Even in the warm months of April, May, June, the wind still bites at night. Bring a variety of jackets as well: wind breaker, light pullover, warm coat. The cold maintains it's own schedule!
