How To Use Hypnosis For Pain Control Part 2 Glove Anesthesia

How To Use Hypnosis For Pain Control Part 2 Glove Anesthesia
Part of the basic education that I give all my hypnosis clients on their first visit is "The body can't tell the difference between imagination and reality." I may not be obvious at first, but just think: your mouth starts to water when your friend describes a delicious meal, or you jump involuntarily when there is a sudden loud sound in a movie. There is no food in your mouth, yet your body produces more saliva. You know that you are perfectly safe, but your body goes to battle stations, pumping lots of adrenaline into your system, when that car suddenly explodes on screen.

So what do battle stations and a watering mouth have to do with pain control? It's simple. When a hypnotherapist uses specific kinds of imagery with a client in hypnosis, the client's body produces numbness. A common technique is called "glove anesthesia".

The hypnotherapist suggests that the client remember a time he or she was so cold that some part of the body became numb. Everyone has had that kind of experience. For me, it happened at a football game when I was in high school. I hadn't noticed that my feet were numb until I stood up and almost fell over.

Typically the hypnotherapist asks the client to imagine one of their hands in a bucket of ice water so that the hand gets cold enough to become numb. Then the client might be asked to imagine that the numbness is like a thick glove on the hand. So any touch on the gloved hand just feels like a mild kind of pressure.

Once the client indicates that their hand is numb, the hypnotherapist can test by asking the client to close his or her eyes. Then the hypnotherapist uses his or her fingernails to pinch the skin on the back of client's hand hard enough to leave a mark. If glove anesthesia is present, client will only feel a little pressure. The client is astonished after opening his or her eyes to see the nail marks on their hand.

The way that hypnosis helps to creates glove anesthesia is by amplifying the client's imagination. The stronger the imagined events, the stronger the response from the body.

Once the clients have learned to create glove anesthesia, they can be taught to move the numbness to any area of the body that they wish. For example, someone with chronic headaches could move the numbness to the painful areas of the head.

Teaching someone to use hypnosis to control pain with glove anesthesia usually can be done in one session. It is an easy way to use a little self hypnosis to produce relief for someone in pain.

The Story Of Ericksonian Hypnosis

Since thousands of years ago, hypnosis has been used to some extent in every culture. It has been used by many doctors thorough the years but it has not always been considered a viable means of assistance. The world of psychology got very interested in hypnosis and used it with some amount of success.

Currently there is a very famous means of hypnotizing people known as Ericksonian hypnosis. It has many applications.

What Is The Difference Between Ericksonian Hypnosis And Traditional Hypnosis?

When people think about hypnosis they always imagine a very typical image of a hypnotherapist giving strong commands to people in a semi conscious state or sometimes in deep trance. This is not the case of Milton Erickson's discovery.

Milton Erickson was a poor man born in 1902. He grew up in a rural environment. Nobody could have imagined that this man would invent some kind of hypnosis. He received a very bad education and he was indeed color blind, dyslexic and tone deaf. Not the image of someone who would then create Ericksonian hypnosis, and become very well famous.

He contracted polio at the age of seventeen. This left him paralyzed. His parents, who were very poor, doing the best they could, tied him to a chair during the day, while they went to work, and he was left in the house. As Milton could not move, he spent most of his time watching people's movements and their body language. He realized that people had some kind of subtle body language and that our bodies can communicate things that we do not want. He also liked to visualize himself moving, walking or playing outside. He could even move his chair when he was in such a deep state of concentration. He also noticed his baby sister's movements and he started imitating her, until he could walk himself.

Thanks to this success, he could develop Ericksonian hypnosis. In this kind of hypnosis the hypnotist gives indirect suggestions instead of direct ones as it is the case in classical hypnosis. The Ericksonian hypnosis approach can use both deep trance state and storytelling.

In Ericksonian hypnosis through storytelling, a general topic is used over and over in order for the subconscious mind to pick up the messages the hypnotist is trying to send.

This kind of hypnosis is in a very wide use these days. There are different approaches and methods to using it both during trance states and through story telling.

Even some people report that Ericksonian hypnosis has worked for them in cases when classical hypnosis has failed.

What Is Hypnotherapy

What Is Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic modality that is based on the premise that the mind and body do not work in isolation.

Hypnotherapy is a therapy that is undertaken with a subject in hypnosis. In a hypnotic state, the conscious mind is suppressed and the subconscious mind is revealed. The hypnotherapist is able to suggest ideas, concepts and life style adaptations to the client, the seeds of which become firmly planted in the subconscious mind.

Hypnotherapy is a kind of psychotherapy. Hypnotherapy aims to re-program patterns of behavior within the mind, enabling, irrational fears, phobias, negative through and suppressed emotions to be overcome.

There are many forms of psychological therapy but Hypnotherapy is distinctive in that Hypnotherapy attempts to address the client's subconscious mind. In practice, the Hypnotherapist often (but not exclusively) requires the client to be in a relaxed state, frequently enlists the power of the client's own imagination and may utilise a wide range of techniques from story telling, metaphor or symbolism (judged to be meaningful to the individual client) to the use of direct suggestions for beneficial change.

During Hypnotherapy sessions, analytical techniques may also be employed in an attempt to uncover problems deemed to lie in a client's past or therapy may concentrate more on a client's current life and presenting problems. Hypnotherapy is generally considered helpful if the client is personally motivated to change (rather than relying solely on the hypnotherapist's efforts) although a belief in the possibility of beneficial change may be a sufficient starting point.

Regardless of the techniques employed, perhaps the most important thing about Hypnotherapy is that a client should expect to feel comfortable and at ease with their therapist. This is of particular importance in Hypnotherapy, in which the value of the treatment is greatly enhanced when there is confidence in the practitioner.

Hypnotherapy can be applied to a wide range of medical, dental and psychological problems like anxiety and stress conditions, weight control, addictive behaviours and confidence issues. Hypnotherapy is also used to enhance performance in several areas such as sport and public speaking.

Unlike many other psychological therapies, Hypnotherapy is generally considered to be a fairly short-term approach in which beneficial change, if it is to occur, should become apparent within a relatively few sessions.

In actual practice, most Hypnotherapists will combine hypnotherapeutic procedures with other appropriate counselling and therapeutic techniques. Should there be any doubt about the combination of skills utilised in individual cases, the hypnotherapist should be asked directly for a further explanation of their preferred methodology.

TYPES OF HYPNOTHERAPY

SUGGESTION HYPNOTHERAPY

Suggestion hypnotherapy involves the hypnotherapist giving an individuals unconscious mind a series of 'suggestions'. These suggestions can help an individual to find it easier to do something they want to do (e.g. public speaking) or easier to stop doing something they don't want to do (e.g. smoking).

Suggestion Hypnotherapy is often used when there is no root cause that needs to be dealt with, or when there are time constraints (such as an individual wanting to deal with a fear of flying). Suggestion hypnotherapy is often considered a short-term therapy.

ANALYTICAL HYPNOTHERAPY

Analytical Hypnotherapy (also called hypnoanalysis) can be effective in dealing with deeper issues and involves psychotherapy using hypnosis. Analytical hypnotherapy seeks to find the root cause of a problem, and deal with the issue. For example, a phobia may be 'masked' using suggestion therapy, however the root cause will still exist. Analytical hypnotherapy seeks to identify the root cause and deal with it.

Analytical Hypnotherapy is a very involving process and usually requires much more commitment than Suggestion Hypnotherapy. However, once the root cause has been identified and dealt with, the results can be life changing. Where as Suggestion Hypnotherapy manages a problem, Analytical Hypnotherapy aims to resolve it.

COGNITIVE HYPNOTHERAPY

Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a modern, scientifc approach to therapy that is significantly different from the traditional schools of Hypnotherapy. Cognitive Hypnotherapy draws its influence from a number of other validated theories, such as Positive Psychology, Neuroscience, Evolutionary Psychology and NLP and combines these in a way that fits the client's personal goals, values and personality. Drawing from a range of techniques from different disciplines means that a tailored approach for each client can be created - there's no "one size fits all" model here.

Cognitive Hypnotherapists attempt to get into the mindset of the client to work through any presenting issues, using techniques and language based on the client's unique model of the world. Cognitive Hypnotherapy also uses an analytical approach to clearing away unwanted thoughts and behaviours from the past, but then uses techniques that retrain the brain in the present to ensure that the changes that clients would like to make are fully realised.

Some schools of hypnotherapy have distinguished their approach to applying hypnotherapy in a particular way with specific label. For example a hypnotherapist may state that they are a regression hypnotherapist. This simply refers to the guidance of a client back into their personal history with the intention of addressing past possibly disturbing experience. All hypnotherapy, possibly with the exception of Suggestion Hypnotherapy, may include regression and it would often be part of an Analytical Hypnotherapy and Cognitive Hypnotherapy series of sessions.

How Hypnotherapy Works

How Hypnotherapy Works
I'm going to let you know about all the fantastic benefits that hypnotherapy can bring to your life. I will show you how hypnotherapy can make your life a whole lot better, as it does for millions of people around the world every year. Hypnotherapy can help you with almost everything you can think of. Traditionally it was seen as a tool to help relaxation, smoking cessation, and cure phobias. However this is actually only the tip of the iceberg. Like I said before, hypnotherapy can help with almost everything. Hypnosis is now becoming more frequently used for beauty procedures. For instance, a skilled hypnotherapist can help relax the facial muscles, which very closely mimics a botox procedure without the use of needles and toxic substances. Hypnotherapy is also great for helping improve the skin. Without getting to technical, the central nervous system is closely linked to the skin, which is why sometimes people suffering from stress can have skin complaints as a result. The relaxing nature of hypnosis can significantly help with most skin complaints. Hypnotherapy works by tuning down the conscious part of the mind, enabling the therapist to more easily talk to the subconscious part. This is the part that is responsible for our more automatic responses, such as our habits, fears, and even breathing and heart rate. A good hypnotherapist can for example help change habits by talking to the subconscious mind. They can persuade a person's subconscious mind that there is no need to fear birds for example. They can persuade them that smoking is bad for them. You can persuade someone consciously that smoking is bad, but yet a person still persists to smoke. This is because their subconscious mind has not yet been persuaded. Remember that this is the part of the mind that is responsible for habits? Once the subconscious mind is made aware of the dangers of smoking, then it will no longer drive that person to smoke. Hypnosis can also help significantly with weight loss. A person's subconscious mind can be persuaded to exercise more and eat more sensible foods. It cannot make the weight fall off magically, but it can change our habits to facilitate this. The net result is weight loss. Hypnosis is also commonly used for people aiming to achieve success in many endeavours. Tiger Woods is one high profile example of how hypnosis can be used to help with sporting success. He has used hypnosis to train his mind to get the most out of his amazing golfing skills. However hypnosis can also be used to help people pass exams, do a great interview and get a better job, and even to attract a new partner. So if there is anything you want in life, then hypnosis is likely to be able to help you attain it. It really is mind boggling at the wide range of therapies that are now available. There are many people taking the advantages of being regular users of hypnosis, and those that are not are simply getting left behind. These people are enjoying an advantage over the people that are not yet using hypnosis. Don't miss out any longer, give hypnosis a go. About the Author You can try hypnotherapy for yourself at leading hypnosis website HypnoBusters. For beginners I recommend the relaxation hypnosis MP3.

What Is Hypnosis And How Does It Work

What Is Hypnosis And How Does It Work
Towards the back end of 2009 the BBC reported on a study that was performed at Hull University in England. For proponents of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, the findings were very exciting indeed. The research showed that the brains scans of people who had been hypnotized showed a decreased level of activity in the part of the brain linked to daydreaming compared to those who were in a normal state of mind. This would seem to prove that hypnosis isn't just the placebo that skeptics make it out to be.

Since the news of this study broke more and more people have been willing to try hypnosis as a complementary treatment. The fact that it can be used to help treat addictions, anxiety, health issues, weight problems and other things means that hypnosis can aid a wide number of people. Even with this new found confidence people have in hypnosis though, few laypeople understand what hypnosis is and how it works.

While scientists are still not 100% sure about what hypnosis is and how it works (this can be attributed to the fact that we have only just scratched the surface on how the mind itself works), there is a general prevailing theory.

Hypnosis is considered to be an altered state of awareness whereby the person hypnotized obtains a heightened state of focus. This state primes the subconscious mind to be altered with hypnotic suggestions. This is the point at which a hypnotherapist will implant suggestions to their client that they no longer crave to smoke, that they desire to exercise regularly or that their body is healing at a faster rate. Because the subconscious part of the mind has difficulty distinguishing between fantasy and reality in the way that the conscious mind can, it begins to believe the hypnotic suggestions to be very real which causes a change in the way the mind works. Whereas before they had been hypnotized a person might crave a cigarette once every hour or so, after hypnosis these cravings would become more manageable or perhaps dissipate entirely.

A session of hypnosis consists of five parts. It begins with pre-talk where the hypnotherapist and their client discuss what they hope to achieve from the session. Then the session itself begins with a hypnotic induction which induces a light hypnotic state in the client. There is then a hypnotic deepener which deepens the hypnotic state. Both the induction and deepener typically consist of deep breathing exercises and/or creative visualization. At this point the client is ready to take hypnotic suggestions on board. Depending on the pre-agreed purpose of the session the suggestions could be to eat less fatty foods, exercise more often, feel confident around members of the opposite sex, or whatever else they wish to achieve. After this is done the hypnotherapist then wakes the client from the hypnotic state and the session is concluded.

Contrary to popular belief the client is neither asleep or unconscious whilst they are hypnotized. They are fully aware of what is being said to them and anything that may be happening around them. This is why a hypnotherapist can't make someone do something that they don't wish to do. Some people worry that a hypnotherapist might make them tell them all their secrets. However, not only is this not possible as the client would simply refuse (plus it is also possible to lie under hypnosis which is why hypnotic regressions cannot be used in a court of law) but a hypnotherapist would not want to risk their good name and business by doing something so highly unethical.

I hope that this article has cleared up any questions you may have about hypnosis. Should you choose to use it as a form of treatment I wish you the very best of success.
